Pet Dog

Buying a Pet Dog

The little girl and her pet dog was surrounded by the minions of the greed-eyed man—there were, helicopters, tanks, armored vehicles and hundreds of soldiers armed to the teeth. There seems to be no escape. The only way out is to surrender or else be exterminated. The little girl looked at her ever-vigilant pet dog and said: “Bolt. Super Bark.” The dog let out one powerful bark and suddenly all the helicopters, tanks, armored vehicles and soldiers were blown away as if a huge tornado passed by. Just like that, it was all over. The girl patted her pet dog, and once again the world was saved thanks to Super Bolt.

There was a general scream of joy from the audience of mostly pre-teens in the whole movie house after this scene. My own kids began clapping their hands with glee and screamed: “That was super duper cool!” Indeed it was. Despite of myself, I found myself enjoying the latest three dimensional animated picture from Walt Disney. Bolt is all about a pet dog voiced by John Travolta and his person voiced by one of the most popular teens today Miley Cyrus. Like the movie Truman Show, the dog Bolt does not know that he is just a character in a hit TV series and that he has no superpowers. When his owner was supposedly kidnapped in the series Bolt escaped from the studio to save the day only to be awakened of the bitter reality.

After the movie, we went out to eat some ice cream. The kids were busy talking about the movie and how cool it was when my youngest looked at me with the puppy dog look I am sure he got from Bolt and asked: “Pa, can we get a pet dog?” There it is. I have been expecting that question ever since that adorable looking animated dog appeared on screen. His siblings also began to look at me with puppy dog stares and joined in. “Oh yes please pa.” “We will take care of him promise!” I have no qualms about dogs. I grew up in a home where at one time we had four dogs. I remember my mother giving them funny names taken from the local movie stars and singers. But I also remember the responsibilities involved in taking care of the dogs. They eat a lot, and I mean a lot. And their food is expensive and took quite a toll in our household budget. So despite the pleas of my kids, I stood my ground and refused their request. I explained to them that taking care of dogs is something to be taken seriously. I told them that dogs require time, love and money, and that they must first prove to me that they would be responsible enough to take care of one. Disappointed eyes greet me. My youngest seem close to tears. So I told them that if they will be good boys at the end of the year, I will buy them a dog. Let us see what happens till then.
